Making a detailed drawing of the plumbing system would save time and expenses later on, especially if you plan to eventually remodel the building. Drawing the job in detail helps you think of not only where certain things and what certain rooms could be used for, but could be able to spot something that you might have overlooked. What are the necessary details needed for making plumbing drawings?

  1. Key Coding

You could code your map with all of these different elements, like show drainpipes with solid lines and supply lines with broken lines so it is easier to identify when you are looking at the drawn map. Mark the hot and cold supply lines with different colored pencils and color code the drains and vents.

You could draw several versions of the plumbing plan so that you would have a lot of options and plans in case the main one you planned out doesn’t work, and so that you would be able to get all the details right.

  1. DWV Elevation

The drain-waste-vent elevation will describe the system that carries the water waste, water, and air out of the house, in other words, the ventilation, and disposal systems. This is the upward path of the stacks and vents, showing the length of the drainpipes and the traps, giving you a visual of how the fixtures will be vented.

This indicated the estimated length of all of the supply pipes, giving the pipe sizes as well. This is used to determine the minimum size of the pipes so when you start shipping for materials, you are going to buy the right sizes and length of the materials.

How many types of plumbing systems can be installed in a building?

3 main plumbing systems are installed in a building:

  1. Potable System

  • Straight Pipes– they quickly direct the water to where it is supposed to be
  • Brass and Gate Valves– control the flow of water

The stormwater plumbing system removes the rainwater from the building.

These include:

  • Roof- This is designed to make sure that the water would travel down into the pipes and is removed from the area to avoid flooding.
  • Subsoil- It is needed to make sure the water is not trapped below the ground, saving the soil from being too soft. These drains collect the stormwater from the ground and transfer it into a drain before it runs off to other properties.
  • Surface- The paved or unpaved areas have the water form remaining there removed through the angle of the surface. 
  1. Sanitary System 

The Sanitary Plumbing Systems are the systems that remove all of the wattages from the building, like human wastage, and wastewater from cooking and washing.

The plumbing systems included are:

  • Gravity Systems- This is the more common type of sanitary system that uses the natural slope of the ground to easily collect the wastewater and brings it to the sewage network, using gravity to its advantage.
  • Vacuum Systems- This is an alternative for the gravity system, instead of using gravity, you use electricity. The sewage systems are connected through vacuum valves, discharge pumps, or a collection chamber to get the wastewater out of the building.
  • Low-Pressure Systems- An interceptor tank with a chamber unit holds a small electric pump, transporting the waste to the main sewage plant using small pressure lines.
